Ribery Named French Footballer Of The Year.

Bayern Munich winger Franck Ribery has been named the french Player of the Year by France Football magazine.

The 30-year-old French footballer beat midfield duo Paul Pogba of Juventus and Paris St Germain’s Blaise Matuidi in a poll of past and present French players.

Franck Ribery is One of the Three Candidates for the 2013 FIFA Ballon d’Or.

Ribery, who won the Champions League, the Bundesliga and the German Cup with Bayern this year, was named on a three-man shortlist for the FIFA-Ballon d’Or award on Monday along with Barcelona’s Lionel Messi and Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo.

AS Roma’s Rudi Garcia, who joined the Serie A club from Lille during the close season and is unbeaten in 15 league matches, was named the best French coach for 2013 in a poll of current and former managers.

Ribery has now won the award three times, two short of former Arsenal FC striker, Thierry Henry.

Bank robbery: Two killed, two injured in Ekiti

Two people were reportedly killed on Thursday evening at Ikere Ekiti, as a five-man robbery gang stormed a commercial bank in the town carting away several millions of naira. One of the victims was identified as a commercial motorcyclist operating in the town. However, the Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti State Command, Mr. Victor Babayemi, said one person was killed during the robbery attack. It was learnt that two others were hit by the robbers bullets during the attack that lasted close to 30 minutes. The duo (names not given) are said to be receiving treatment at the hospital. It was learnt that the bandits trailed a bullion van conveying an undisclosed amount of money from Ado Ekit, the state capital to the bank with a Nissan saloon car. The bandits reportedly demolished the security door with a dynamite in order to gain entry into the banking hall and headed straight to the strong room. The Special Anti-Robbery Squad in the command were reportedly booed by the aggrieved residents in protest against the police late arrival. However, the PPRO said the men responded swiftly to signal and arrived at the scene on time. It was gathered that the robbers set their vehicle on fire to escape.

Atletico Madrid striker David Villa

Spain's record goalscorer revealed that Arsenal was interested in securing his services while he was still at Barcelona, but has expressed his happiness at Atletico's progress.

Atletico Madrid striker David Villa has revealed that he was the subject of a bid from Arsenal while he was still a Barcelona player.

The Gunners’ interest in the Spain international during his days at Camp Nou had long been rumoured, and Villa explained that it was only Barca’s reluctance to sell that prevented him from moving to the Premier League last January.

“Arsenal’s offer was very good for the club and great for me,” he said to Canal +. “But they [Barcelona], did not deem it feasible for me to leave at that time. I was told that I was needed.”

Villa would eventually join Atletico in July for 5.1 million euros and, with eight goals in 15 league games, has helped the Rojiblancos to second place in la Liga, level on points at the top of the table with his former club.

And the 32-year-old could not hide his delight at his performances for his new side, though he maintained that he derived his primary pleasure from the fortunes of the team as a whole.

“I'm happy because my goals and performance on the field have helped the team to achieve their goals, because after all, as you know, I think more collective than individual,” he added.

Villa feels that Atletico, which has been impressive both domestically and abroad this season, is capable of great things, and commended the influence of coach Diego Simeone.

“This team was already complete [when I joined], and have been playing well for some years, being courageous and winning many important things,” he continued. “They excited me from the offset, and have made me feel that the more I have integrated into the club, and Diego Simeone has the motivating virtues of Luis Aragones and Pep Guardiola.”

But Spain’s leading goalscorer still had nothing but praise for Barcelona, and insisted that there was never friction between himself and former Blaugrana teammate Lionel Messi.

“Both Leo [Messi] and I, as with all teammates that I’ve had at other clubs, had a very good relationship,” he said. “The club has always shown me great affection, and fulfilled their promise to sell me in the summer. I have only words of gratitude for Barca.”

Tottenham Hotspur 4-1 Anzhi Makhachkala

Roberto Soldado scored his first Tottenham hat-trick as Spurs maintained their 100% record in the Europa League by easing past Anzhi Makhachkala.

The hosts were already guaranteed top spot in Group K, but began with an attacking verve as Soldado headed in Gylfi Sigurdsson's free-kick before finishing well from Erik Lamela's pass.

Anzhi responded before the break when Ewerton Almeida Santos stabbed in.

But Lewis Holtby's delicate volley and Soldado's penalty confirmed the win.

Like Tottenham, the Russian visitors had already sealed progress to the last 32 prior to this game, and although they caused moments of worry for Andre Villas-Boas's team, they were eventually overpowered.

By winning the group, Spurs will play at White Hart Lane in the second leg of their Europa League knockout tie in February and they will take heart for the remainder of the competition after a confident display.

This was their fifth game unbeaten since they were thumped 6-0 by Manchester City last month.

Soldado scored his first goals from open play in front of the home supporters since his £26m move from Valencia in the summer, and was greeted with cheers as he departed 12 minutes from the end.

Anzhi might be bottom of the Russian Premier League after having to sell former stars such as Samuel Eto'o and Willian because of cost-cutting, but an energetic Tottenham certainly answered Villas-Boas's calls to make an impression before they host second-placed Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

Spurs had suffered an early scare before they went ahead when Ilya Maksimov failed to test Brad Friedel when clean through, but Andros Townsend was then brought down with Soldado flicking in Sigurdsson's whipped free-kick after seven minutes.

That was Soldado's first goal since 27 October and the 28-year-old added another six minutes later, when Erik Lamela played him in with a cute pass and the Spaniard found the bottom corner.

Townsend then should have made it 3-0 but chipped wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.

Despite their fragility in defence, there were still signs Anzhi could prosper in attack and the Russian side pulled a goal back after 44 minutes when Eweton prodded home from a corner.

Townsend continued to be the hosts' most positive outlet, and he set up a third goal when he drifted in from the right, chipped to Holtby, who took one touch with his left and then flicked into the top corner with the same foot.

Villas-Boas then introduced 21-year-old Ryan Fredericks in defence, and although it was his first game this season, he wasted little time in causing havoc.

After another surging run, Fredericks was clipped in the penalty area and, after a nod from the official behind the goal-line, Swedish referee Stefan Johannesson awarded the spot-kick.

Soldado found the net from 12 yards for his seventh goal of the season, although Anzhi goalkeeper Evgeni Pomazan got a hand to it, sending the Spurs fans home in good spirits after a thoroughly entertaining game for a dead rubber.

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan's office has hit back at ex-leader Olusegun Obasanjo

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan's office has hit back at ex-leader Olusegun Obasanjo for a "provocative" letter condemning his leadership.

In the leaked letter, Mr Obasanjo warned Nigeria could slide back to military rule because of Mr Jonathan's failure to tackle myriad problems.

It would be "morally flawed" for him to seek re-election in 2015, he added.

The presidency said Mr Obasanjo's attack was "reckless, baseless, unjustifiable and indecorous".

Mr Obasanjo's attack - the harshest since he stepped down as leader in 2007 - was a clear attempt to thwart Mr Jonathan's chances of being nominated again as the governing People's Democratic Party's (PDP) candidate for the 2015 poll, correspondents say.

'Highly unbecoming'

The PDP has been hit by serious in-fighting ahead of the election.

A powerful faction of state governors have broken away to join the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC).

The PDP now has fewer governors supporting it than the opposition.

In the 18-page letter widely covered in the local media, Mr Obasanjo accused Mr Jonathan of failing to deal with the many problems facing Nigeria - including corruption, piracy, kidnapping and oil theft.

Mr Obasanjo is a former military ruler and a winner to two democratic elections
"I want nothing from you personally except that you should run the affairs of Nigeria not only to make Nigeria good, but to make Nigeria great for which I have always pleaded with you and I will always do so. And it is yet to be done for most Nigerians to see," Mr Obasanjo wrote.

He added that he was speaking out because he was concerned that Nigeria was moving in the wrong direction.

"I could sense a semblance between the situation that we are gradually getting into and the situation we fell into as a nation during the Abacha era," he said, referring to ex-military ruler General Sani Abacha.

He ruled Nigeria with an iron fist from 1993 to 1998, when he died.

He jailed Mr Obasanjo for allegedly plotting a coup against him and ordered the execution of leading human rights activist Ken Saro-Wiwa.

Mr Jonathan's spokesman Reuben Abati said it was "highly unbecoming, mischievous and provocative" to leak the letter to the media and it was a deliberate effort to "impugn the integrity of the president".

Mr Jonathan would respond in due course to "the most reckless, baseless, unjustifiable and indecorous charges levied against him and his administration", Mr Abati said, in a statement.

Mr Obasanjo, a former military ruler, won democratic elections in 1999 and 2003 on the platform of the PDP.

The PDP has won every national election since the end of military rule in 1999.

Mr Jonathan moved from the vice-presidency to the presidency in 2010 after his predecessor, Umaru Yar'Adua, died in office.

He won elections the following year.

Fare Thee Well, Nelson Mandela

Apartheid is among the greatest crimes in human history. During the times it thrived, those who challenged it, like those who questioned colonialism, were branded terrorists. All sorts of words were invented by the oppressors to castigate those who they thought posed a danger to the status-quo and to their enjoyment.
Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela did not choose his circumstances, rather the circumstances chose him. Like people of his generation, he had no option than to fight for his freedom against a brutal system that threatened to take away his human dignity. The humanity of people like Mandela was questioned in their native South Africa. From the onset, Madiba, as he is popularly called, was never in two minds that his destiny was to fight in every possible way to free himself and his people. And this was what he did for the most part of his life, at the expense of his personal life. He fought to give a life to black South Africans. In the famous Rivonia trial in 1964, instead of testifying, Mandela stubbornly opted to give a speech rather. That speech lasted four hours to the chagrin of the court. He ended by saying: “During my lifetime, I have dedicated myself to this struggle of the African people. I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society, in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunities. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But if need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.”
He never wavered; he never compromised. He fought for those ideals and he was victorious. Apartheid was crushed. South Africans became free in their own country and voted for the first time in 1994 in an election that put the icing on Mandela’s long tortuous fight and journey to freedom and victory against oppression and repression. He became South Africa’s first black president with a massive landslide victory in the first democratic election.Mandela’s victory came at a heavy price. Essentially, he sacrificed his life so that his people can be free. He turned down all conditional offers of release. To him, the total freedom of black South Africans was not negotiable. His life never mattered more to him. According to him: “What counts in life is not the mere fact that we have lived. It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.”The struggle cost him his youth and the golden ages they say begin at forty. It deprived him his family life, including seeing his children grow up. Above all, it cost him his marriage to his ex-wife, Winnie, who stood by him and was the voice of the struggle in those years Mandela was incarcerated at Robin Island. Nevertheless, he was never bitter against his tormentors and jailers. At his inauguration in 1994 as president, Mandela looked them straight in the eye as they sat at the front row and offered them a genuine hand of forgiveness and reconciliation. And it was very genuine. Herein lies the enigma called Nelson Mandela. What kind of a man would forgive those who tucked him away in prison for 27 years of his life? 27 years. Not 27 days; not 27 weeks and certainly not 27 months. Twenty-seven punishing years! Only an extraordinary man would do that. Mandela was one. He was a man of extraordinary compassion, generosity and forgiveness. As aptly put by US President, Barack Obama: “He achieved more than could be expected of any man.” Notwithstanding, Mandela was humble and magnanimous even in his victories, which he loved to share with others, including those he defeated. At that 1994 inauguration, Mandela was seen been more interested in raising high the hand of F.W de Clerk – a kind of saying that it was also a victory for him.Nobody in life has done what Mandela did. However, he achieved all that with amazing grace and infectious humour, side by side the capacity to acknowledge his imperfections. This adds to make him more amazing. Once the great Madiba said, "I'm not a saint unless you think of a saint as a sinner who keeps on trying." This was the modesty that typified and never left him despite all exemplary achievements and victories.Madiba was one of the few African leaders who recognised that power should only be used to improve the lives of the people who conferred it. He is one of a kind and unfortunately there is no else like him among former or present day African leaders. And none is willing to imitate or draw inspiration from him.Mandela inspired the world. I am one of the countless millions who drew inspiration from his life.  I still remember vividly my excitement when he came to my University, University of Lagos shortly after he was released from prison in 1990. As an undergraduate I was already political conscious. His story made me more political conscious. Since then, I have tried to fight other people’s fight and to give voice to the voiceless. Thank you Madiba!As British Prime Minister, David Cameron rightly said: "one of the brightest lights of our world has gone out. Nelson Mandela was not just a hero of our time, but a hero of all time.” To me, from the perspective of humanity, Mandela was the greatest man that ever lived on planet Earth.Madiba, your life of service was a burning flame that provided light, love, hope and freedom for all. Nigerian Twin Couples Earn a Spot In The Guinness Book Of World Records

Folawemi Taiwo Okunniyi and Febisola Kehinde Okunniyi Chinonso Akinade Okueze and Chibuzor Adelakin Okueze, have earned themselves a spot in the Guinness book of Records, for being the first set of identical twins to get married in Africa.

The Nigerian couples who hail from Ondo and Delta states tied the knot recently at Foursquare Gospel Church, Omole, Ikeja and had their reception at the 10 Degree Events Centre in Oregun, Lagos has also occupied the 251st position in the world.

During the church wedding, officials of the Guinnes Book of World Records acknowledged that they have never had any record or history of twins’ marriage in Africa.

The Press Screening was attended by her beau, Jim Iyke who also features in the movie.

During the screening, a ring was spotted on Nadia Buari’s finger.

We are not exactly sure what ring it is, but it sure looks like an engagement ring!

That means that eight groups have been resolved with winners (in one pot), runners-up (in the other pot), third-place finishers (eliminated, but enter into the UEFA Europa League) and last-place teams (eliminated).
The draw for the start of the knockout rounds is Monday. Games resume Feb. 18-19, 25–26 and March 11-12, 18-19.

North West may only be 6 months old, but she's already quite the
traveler.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West's beautiful baby girl is no stranger
to living a lavish lifestyle, so her trip to New York City involved
some stops at well-known hot spots and, of course, shopping.
"I took North for her 1st day out in NYC!" the E! star wrote on her
blog yesterday. "I took her to have a quick tea with her daddy then
meet Lorraine Schwartz and Ofira for lunch at Bergdorf's! She will
never forget her 1st NYC shopping experience with Lorraine's aunt
Debbie! We really had a great day! Xo."
The pretty pair made their shopping trip in mid-November. The
supercute mother-daughter duo were all bundled up to meet up
with Kanye West at the Mercer Hotel, with Kim strutting a long cozy
coat to go with her all-black ensemble, and Nori wrapped in a light
soft blanket.
A source told E! News at the time that a paparazzo tried to get a
little too close and knocked into Nori's stroller. Kim reportedly told
the photographer to please watch out, but fortunately she and Nori
were unharmed by the minor incident and it clearly didn't seem to
put a damper on their trip.
North continues to knock big cities off her list after most recently
stopping in Miami. Kim Instagrammed a shot of her precious mini-
me getting "art lessons" by Jeff Koons, a bigwig in the art world
whose works have sold for record amounts, during the famous Art
Basel show.
Looks like it's going to be just as tough trying to keep up with Nori!

World leaders from around the globe and tens of thousands of South Africans gathered in FNB Stadium in Johannesburg on Monday to celebrate the life of Nelson Mandela. President Obama, former president Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton were among those in attendance at the massive memorial service. All dreams are possible," Hov told the L.A. crowd on Monday as pictures of the man they called Madiba flashed on the arena's screens. 'Clef sits alone in a room playing guitar and rides the rhythm, telling Mandela's story in song form. "I wrote this song when I shook the hand of the prophet, Nelson Mandela," he wailed as a picture of Wylcef, U2's Bono and Mandela appeared onscreen.The Game expressed his love for Madiba in a different way. In an Instagram posted on Tuesday, the Compton rapper showed off a new Nelson Mandela tattoo, which he got inked on the side of his torso.
